Challenge / Goal
After several years as a businessman in the chemical and petroleum industry, Jens-Peter Wedlich volunteered with Greenpeace Stuttgart in the area of oceans. It was there that he first came into contact with the problems of our world, including the flood of plastics. Through a fortunate circumstance, he was given the opportunity to start all over again.
In order to decisively contribute to a better world, he decided to develop Schüttgut and implement it with his own principles (BIO+).
The goals of Schüttgut are to take on the environmental and climate challenges of our time to the best of our ability and to accompany people on this path of change.
Solution
Schüttgut is the first BIO+retailer for food and everyday products. We create the opportunity for a change in awareness in consumer consumption behavior and the associated development of a sustainable society.
- We focus on the elimination of unnecessary disposable packaging. Customers bring their own containers for dry food, cheese, fruit and vegetables.
This prevents waste. - The customer fills the desired product himself. They can take as much as they need.
This prevents food waste. - "Moist products" we offer in reusable jars and bottles.
This reduces waste. - In the case of detergents and cleaning agents, we give the original containers several lives, as they are refilled. At the end of their life cycle, they are returned to the manufacturer for internal recycling.
This gives us a closed loop. - Our organic certification is the basis of our actions,
- We source many products from regional producers and pay greater attention to seasonality in the case of fruit and vegetables.
This reduces long transport routes and the consumption of resources. - For non-food items, we pay attention to longevity and sustainability. This is done under the aspects and possibilities along the R's of the Zero Waste principle (Refuse, Reduce, Re Use, Recycle, Rot).
- Schüttgut follows the UN's pioneering Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in the meantime has at least one measure for each principle that achieves the respective goal.
- In collaboration with our supply partners and the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde (HNEE), we develop approaches for sustainable supply chains.
We value interaction with people and invite them to join us on the path to a livable future.
