Especially in the field of environmental and climate protection, it is essential not only to think in terms of nations, but to act across borders. For this reason, an exchange of knowledge and learning from and with each other between the European states and their neighboring countries is very important.

In order to promote cooperation and dialogue, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment is providing funding of 2.6 million euros as part of the European Environmental Protection Initiative. These funds support NGOs, foundations as well as non-profit companies, research institutions, universities and think tanks that are based in an EU or EFTA member state and implement non-profit projects that go beyond their own national borders.

The focus is on topics in the field of environmental protection (e.g. immission, marine, soil and resource protection, recycling and water management, etc.), but other projects that contribute to one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals can also be funded.
