For centuries, people have been using plant dyes to color a wide variety of materials. Easter eggs can also be colored naturally using simple household remedies, and the result is often even more appealing than with chemical dyes. A popular classic for dyeing eggs is the use of onion skins, which provide a vibrant yellow or rust-red color. However, the repertoire of natural dyes from the kitchen and garden is extensive and offers numerous possibilities for artistically decorating the white eggshell.

We have put together a few coloring tips here.

A particular advantage of using natural dyes from plants is that one step can be saved when preparing the eggs. The eggs are boiled directly in the coloring broth from the plants, which eliminates the need for pre-boiling.

Here are some home remedies that make Easter eggs glow in different shades:

  • Yellow Easter eggs: chamomile flowers and turmeric powder create a radiant yellow hue.
  • Orange Easter eggs: Onion skins give the eggs a vibrant orange to rich red hue.
  • Red Easter eggs: Beetroot gives the shell a vibrant red to pink color.
  • Green Easter eggs: Nettle leaves or mate tea give the eggs a fresh yellow-green, while spinach creates a more delicate green shade.
  • Blue Easter eggs: Red cabbage or red cabbage color the eggs a beautiful shade of blue.
  • Purple Easter eggs: Blueberry or elderberry juice conjure up a purple hue on the eggshell.
  • Brown Easter eggs: Coffee gives the eggs a warm brown hue.

This is how it's done:

  1. Boil two to three handfuls of chopped plant parts in a liter of water for the color bath.
  2. Let the brew simmer for at least 20 minutes over a low heat.
  3. Remove the plant parts from the broth and carefully dip the uncooked eggs into it.
  4. Add a dash of vinegar and boil the eggs in the dye bath for about 10 minutes.
  5. For stronger colors, you can leave the eggs in the dye bath for several hours.
  6. Finally, you can rub the dried Easter eggs with a little vegetable oil to create a beautiful shine.

Have fun trying it out!
