Challenge / Goal
Pedestrian traffic is probably the most neglected mode of transport in Stuttgart. This is despite the fact that this mode of transport does not produce any emissions, takes up the least space in the road space and was the second most frequently walked mode of transport in Stuttgart in 2017. There are several concepts to promote pedestrian traffic in the state capital of Stuttgart, but there is a lack of real, comprehensive implementation. However, in order to achieve the traffic turnaround as well as the Stuttgart climate goals, a faster and area-wide implementation is necessary. This project aims to bring this necessity more into the public, political and planning discourse, to free the image of pedestrian traffic a bit from its shadowy existence and, last but not least, to show that implementation via real laboratories does not have to cost a lot of money in order to improve the conditions for emission-free and healthy locomotion.
Solution
The following procedural steps were carried out in the spirit of tactical urbanism:
Step 1: Creation of an Instagram account
Step 2: Establishment of an analog-digital network
Step 3: Carrying out spatial observations and uncovering grievances.
Step 4: Developing ideas for necessary interventions
Step 5: Involvement of politicians (in this case the Bezirksbeirat Mitte)
Step 6: Implementation of the interventions
