Smartphones and tablets pollute our environment because raw materials such as copper, aluminum, nickel, tin, cobalt and rare earths are used in their manufacture. The resource consumption from production to disposal of a cell phone weighing about 80 grams is 75.3 kilograms. That is almost a thousand times more! Added to this are the poor working conditions under which raw materials are mined and production is carried out.

What can be done about it?

Step 1: Buy a used cell phone, for example through Refurbed. This can reduce the environmental impact by up to 70%.

2nd step: Use the cell phone as long as possible. In Stuttgart, there are a variety of repair options should the cell phone ever break. There are also repair instructions on iFixit.

Step 3: Dispose of the cell phone properly. That's what the cell phone collection campaign in Baden-Württemberg is for. On the site, you can find out where old cell phones can be dropped off. You can also start your own collection campaigns!
